I’m No Patriot But I’m Twice The Patriot You Are, Donald

My country, tears for thee. Sweet land of diminished decency. For thee I weep.

I’m no patriot but I’m twice the patriot you are…

…because I don’t wear a pin in my lapel signifying a glory you call old. I don’t wave red, white and blue celebrating the day you call independence. And if I were a football player, I’d kneel when some singer sang that anthem you call national.

I’m no patriot but I’m twice the patriot you are…

…because I merely believe in that silly inscription on that metal jutting from the New York harbor. I know it says something about giving us, but clearly not U.S., your tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free. I know a statue is not a statute but America like the entire civilized world allows political asylum for those fleeing certain persecution in their homeland.

They’re tired. Strike one. They’re poor. Strike two. And since you’ve made entry ports largely inaccessible, they’re huddled in masses. They yearn only freedom. To live it. To breathe it. To raise their children in it. But they’re brown. Strike three.

I’m no patriot but I’m twice the patriot you are…

…because I merely believe in due process. I believe in the due process that’s like dew process. Its mist should cover everyone within its midst. I believe it should have covered the New York teenagers accused of rape in the park they call Central. I believe in and fight for those silly little words of innocent until proven guilty.

They were young. Strike one. They were poor. Strike two. You called them animals. You called for their execution. And after science proved their innocence after spending years in jail, you reaffirmed your fact free claim of their guilt. But they were black. Strike three.

I’m no patriot but I’m twice the patriot you are…

…because your version of due process is more like an isolated shower or perhaps isolated sunshine. Because in your eyes, some people radiate goodness. They’re not from the black and brown countries you call shithole. All don’t glow like the Norwegians you call fine or the klansmen you call very fine.

I’m no patriot but I’m twice the patriot you are…

…because I don’t actually believe in your version of America’s greatness, one promised but never fully shown me, yet I am nonetheless willing to fight for its noble ideals, however elusive.

…because you’re merely an infant sitting in your sandbox trying to keep out the brown kids while calling it patriotism. It isn’t. Because you merely use songs, symbols and shiny objects as weapons while calling it patriotism. It isn’t. Because you merely wrap a flag around your racism soiled diaper while calling it patriotism. It isn’t. Because your tiny fingers can only throw pebbles but can’t grasp the humanity of and respect for anyone darker than a dictator in Russia, a Nazi in Virginia or a molester in Alabama. Because your patriotism is like the news you call fake…

I’m no patriot but I’m twice the patriot you are, Donald.
